Linear And Nonlinear Narrative structure
Linear structure in films is when the the narrative follows a chronological structure where aspects of the story follow a specific pattern where they are presented in a simple easy to follow time order.
This type of structure has been popular for many years and was around way before the non-linear narrative structure form. Some examples of this structure is the animated film The Croods. Which follows a family of cavemen and shows them through their progression through the changing world they live in. This uses a clear linear narrative structure.
Non Linear narrative structure is a slightly less conventional narrative technique This will involve using a narrative structure that is not restricted to keeping events in chronological order. Events are often presented in an order that is not expected and then at the end all the events are linked together to create one over arching story. Flashback movies often get mistaken for strictly non linear narrative. Although with these kind of films the flashback usually starts a linearly structured narrative and goes through this linear structure. An example of a non-linear narrative structure is the film Memento. It follows a man who has short term memory loss and is trying to find the person he believes killed his wife. This type of structure is very effective because of the narture of the film and it reflects the story very well and allows for many experimental techniques to be used
